For the past year, my wife and I have been living in Doha Qatar because of her employment. Its been really great for the most part; its different, we get to travel all the time, and it allows me to do photography full time. One really bad thing about Qatar is that it is SUPER dusty, which means when the sun is low on the horizon it isn’t really giving any good light to the land around. It would be fine except that light is best when the sun is low on the horizon line, and needless to say I’ve been having a tough time loving the landscape photography opportunities in the area. Fast-forward to a few weeks ago and I left for a 5 month photo trip around the world! So far we’ve just been in Italy, starting in Rome and then heading up to the Tuscany region.
Now I’ve been to plenty of beautiful places in my life but I must say that Tuscany takes the cake as far as offering beautiful light and amazing subject matter. Typically speaking you have about an hour in the morning and evening when light is pretty good and only about 5 minutes on either end when light is amazing. Here, it seems, that light is amazing for about 30 minutes and you have 2 hours to get great photos in the morning and the evening. Coupled with a few graduated neutral density and polarizing filters its been quite the incredible time. Needless to say, I’ve been going crazy getting great photos of the area and loving the amazing light.
Here’s a few of my favorites of the Southern Tuscany region for a little photo inspiration.
